Prostate Infection And TCM
Prostate infection is very effectively treated by Chinese medicine in both, acute and chronic form. It clears infection, reduces swelling, stops pain, lowers PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) values. The herbal treatment for acute prostatitis is not sought after though, as antibiotics are also very effective and faster acting than herbs. What is invaluable in Chinese medicine is its diagnostic skills to explain etiology behind this chronic problem.
Two types of prostate problem are distinguished:
1. caused by excess 2. caused by deficiency.
The “excess” relates to the presence of something that exists in addition to what is normal and healthy in the body, like bacteria, virus, accumulation of fluids, heat, stagnation etc. The “deficiency” relates to the weakness of an organ or system. The excess type, an acute prostatitis is treated similarly to urinary tract infection, which has the same characteristic symptoms: burning urination often with blood or pus, dark urine with strong odor, urgency and the need for frequent urination, pain in the perineum and inguinal groin area. Diet plays a significant role in the creation of this type of prostate infection. Unhealthy diet and/or weak spleen/pancreas cause an internal accumulation of pathogenic fluids. Additionally, overeating, excess consumption of alcohol, spicy foods and sugar, as well as smoking, all generate heat in the body. That heat readily binds with the already accumulated fluids and creates what is called in Chinese medicine ‘damp-heat’ (accumulation of mucus like fluids and swelling), which makes the body susceptible to an invasion of and an ideal environment for pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. Such combination often results in infection. More...
